My Story
I am a writer and artist who has been a creative since early childhood. I grew up climbing trees and riding horses in the beautiful forests of western Washington state and was inspired by the life growing all around me there. I often won writing competitions as a small child for Young Writers Conferences which helped me to become the author and illustrator that I am today. I was privileged to meet and be mentored by such authors as Mercedes Lackey and Ann McCaffrey who instilled in me the love of a well told story.
I met and married my ex-husband very young, and had six beautiful children - three of whom I am still raising here on my off-grid homestead in Hawai'i. Before that though we traveled and painted together; performing as human statues to make our living and fund the next plane ticket. It was definitely an unusual life early on and led me to meet so many incredible people and learn a lot about kindness and compassion beyond the comfort zone in which I had been raised.
I ran a business as a small-scale custom jewelry and fashion designer here on Hawai'i island which did fairly well until transformation struck in the form of the 2018 lava flow. This emptied the island of the tourists I had come to depend upon for my living and made me realize that if I was going to have any security in my life for my boys that I would need to expand my skill set and so I went back to college.
University was exactly what I needed, and I updated my artistic and literary skills for the digital age. I learned Adobe suite, 3D animation with Maya and Unity, Oil painting, Intaglio printmaking, traditional papermaking, and so much more. I gained the confidence in my vision that I needed to become a published author and illustrator and I met even more incredible artists. That network allowed me to create the team I have now working with me at my new online publishing company Wing & Crow Publishing Studios.
I have learned that life can be difficult and require hard work, that nothing is set in stone, and that change is the only constant. But beyond that I have learned that the most important thing is to have gratitude, be kind, remain hopeful, and never give up. Join me on my journey as an artist, a mother, and a writer as I strive to make my dreams come true and take as many awesome people with me as I can.
